Remembering Michael Callahan

The Heart of Mogo Wheelchairs

Mogo Wheelchairs was born from the vision of Michael Callahan, a remarkable man whose passion, creativity, and compassion changed the lives of countless people. Michael dedicated his life to improving mobility and independence for those living with disabilities. To him, a wheelchair was never just a product, it was freedom, identity, and a pathway to possibility.

Michael’s love of sport drove many of his early innovations, particularly in basketball and tennis, where he also proudly represented Australia. His designs quickly earned respect within the adaptive sports community, but his true gift was the way he listened, collaborated, and created wheelchairs that were as unique as the individuals who used them.

From the very beginning in 1980, Michael championed the idea that every wheelchair should be a true original, each crafted with care, adapted with purpose, and built in partnership with the person who required it. His philosophy of “it takes two to Mogo” meant that success was always defined by collaboration, respect, and shared vision.

Michael also made Mogo a place where people felt valued. Many of the team are wheelchair users themselves, and under his leadership, the workshop became not just a space for innovation, but a community of belonging. He led with kindness, humility and a relentless determination to make the world more accessible.

Since Michael's passing in 2019, his son Leon, along with the dedicated Mogo team, proudly continue the work he began, ensuring that every wheelchair remains a unique creation, crafted with the same care and spirit Michael instilled over 40 years ago.

Michael Callahan will always be remembered not only as a pioneer in adaptive technology, but as a man who brought hope, dignity, and independence to so many individuals.

His vision continues to guide us, and his impact will never be forgotten.
